He is often called the “father of 360° Feedback.” His pioneering research and publications since the mid-1970s on multisource assessment systems led to the development of the 360° Feedback model.

Mark Edwards’ interest in measurement began at the Naval Academy, where he earned a degree in engineering and worked on pilot assessment for the Navy. He later earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from Arizona State University.

Dr. Edwards’ most recent best-selling book, co-authored with Ann J. Ewen, Ph.D., is entitled: 360° Feedback: The Powerful New Model for Employee Assessment & Performance Improvement. Additionally, he published more than 100 articles and contributed to several books, primarily on the assessment of human performance and productivity and organizational change.

While 360° systems have gained popularity today, for many years Mark was among the few advocates of multisource assessment. He was the first to address issues like safeguards, respondent feedback and using intelligent systems in scoring multisource data. He was the first to publish articles with terms like multiple rater performance appraisal, multisource assessment and symbiotic leadership.

Most recently Financial Times named Mark one of the “Top 50 Executive Trainers in the World.” He also won numerous awards for teaching excellence, outstanding journal articles, and effective software and for his service to handicapped job seekers. Software products based on Mark’s research, TEAMS Insight Profiles™, 360° Feedback Tools™, and 360° Net™, were named by HR Executive among the top 10 new products in the human resources field for 1990, 1991, and 1994 respectively.

Dr. Edwards' interests focus on measurement and human productivity improvement. He is Director of the Laboratory for Innovation and Decision Research where multiple rater decision processes are evaluated for applications such as: programming, evaluation, talent assessment, career development, life-style and work-style assessment, merit appraisal, training needs analysis and training effectiveness.

Dr Edwards is professor in the College of Engineering at Arizona State University and founded TEAMS in 1978 to conduct field research on human productivity assessment. In the years since, he has helped to build more than 1,000 feedback systems in more than 600 public and private organizations. More than one million 360° Feedback profiles have been created using TEAMS’ technology.
